Sci-Fi

Akira, Vol. 1 is the grandaddy of sci-fi manga in America. A hugely ambitious tale of psychic powers in a post WWIII Tokyo of the future, exquisitly drawn and extremely cinematic. If you have seen the anime, you are in for a surprise - in adapting it to anime characters were gotten rid of or combined, events changed, and major plot elements were eliminated.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Vol. 1 is the only long-form manga from the anime auteur Hayao Miyazaki. It is messianic tale of a post-apocalyptic world that is slowly being consumed by a forest of poisonous fungus. A young girl, princess of a tiny kingdom on the edge of the sea of corruption is the only person that understands and emphasises with the creatures that live in the forest. Drawn into a war between two empires, she struggles to understand the world that she is in, and to bring peace between the human empires, and between the humans and the forest creatures.

Planetes, Book 1 is classic hard sci-fi. No faster than life drives or light sabers, just space, the near future. Hachimaki is a space garbageman, part of a crew tasked with removing debris from earth orbit. Dreaming of herosim and exploration, he is trying to join the crew of the first manned mission to Jupiter. The manga explores his life and the life of his crewmates, their dreams and regrets. It shows the beauty, grandeur and mystery of space, but also the lonelyness and the sacrifices that must be made, the people that must be left behind on earth, the promises unkept.

Fantasy

Berserk, Vol. 1 is a unique blend of horror and epic fantasy. Set in a medieval Europe that never was, we are first introduced to Guts, a battle scarred warrior with one eye and one arm who seems to be waging a one-man war against a horde of truly horrific demons. Who is he and what is his quest? These questions are answered later as in approximately volume 3-13 the story takes a flashback that shows Guts life from his birth to this point, a story full of cruelty, violence, ambition and betrayal, but also love and friendship. A surprisingly deep story with characters you get to love, with fantastic action and some of the most horrifying monsters in comics.

Horror

We fear the unknown, and he unknowable. A monster is scariest when it is just off the screen, when we don't know it's nature or appearance. Junji Ito is well aware of this. In Uzumaki, Volume 1, Kuruzu-cho is a town infested by spirals. Rather than a creature that can be seen and felt (and by extension killed, or at leat understood), a force with no body, no apparent mind, and no reason infests the town, manifesting itself in unpredictible, horrific ways. A man becomes entranced by spirals, obsessing over them more and more until he kills himself by twisting his body into a spiral. A woman becomes obsessed with removing all spirals from her body, cutting off her fingertips to get rid of the spiral fingerprints. A spiral shaped scar on a girls forehead becomes bigger and bigger, until it engulfs her.

Hideshi Hino is one of the classic masters of manga horror. The Red Snake (Hino Horror, 1) is set in a house in the woods, inhabited by a twisted deranged family. And a mirror is blocking a hallway - a mirror whose other side is said to lead to hell. One day, a crack appears in the mirror, and a red snake escapes...

Samurai fiction
Like westerns in the US, samurai stories are a classic part of Japanese literature and folklore.

The most famous and most Kurasawa-like of all samurai manga release in America is Lone Wolf and Cub Vol. 1: The Assassin's Road (Lone Wolf and Cub (Dark Horse)) is a tale of the shogun's executioner. Framed for a crime he did not commit, he flees with his infant son, taking jobs as an assasin, while seeking revenge on the clan that framed him and took the life of his wife.

Vagabond, Volume 1 is a fictionalised account of the life of legendary real-life swordsman Myamoto Musashi, author of The Book of Five Rings. Absolutely exquisetly drawn and slow-pased, it is especially notable for the incredible feeling of tension and suspense that the accompanies Musashi's various battles.

Romantic Comedy

Sumire is a sucessfull career woman in her late 20's. Tall, beautiful and smart, the graduate of one of Japan's most prestigious Universities, she should be happy, but she is not. Men are intimidated by her height and looks, her female co-workers are jealous of her and gossip behing her back, and her fiancee has just left her for another woman. As Tramps Like Us, Volume 1 begins, Sumire on her way home stumbles upon a cardboard box, and inside it a sleeping young man. She takes him home and helps take care of his injuries, but when he says he has no place to stay and asks if he can stay with her, she repies that he can only do so as her pet, thinking that he will refuse. Instead, he accepst, and so begins an unusual tale of romance and friendship.

Music school is tough for the college students of Nodame Cantabile 1. Shinichi Chiaki is an aspiring composer that can't travel to Europe because of his fear of flying, Megumi Noda "Nodame" is a piano player with little discipline but a lot of heart. Together with the other music students they grumble, study, hang out and try to graduate. A quirky, charming low key comedy with a (very) slowly blossoming romance between the two leads.

Comedy

What is it about the Japanese obsession with kogals - fahsionable schoolgirls in short skirted uniforms? This is the question that Short Cuts, Volume 1seeks to answer, in 2 volumes of absurd, sharply satirical R-rated comic strips.

4 year old Yotsuba is the hero of YOTSUBA&! Volume 1. Endlessly inquisitive and optimistic, she treats everyday activities like buying cake and going to the zoo as great adventures, and we are carried along, buoyed by her sheer joy for life. A great title for all ages, sweet without being cloying, genuinely funny and sure to bring a smile to your face.

Non-genre

This is the category for manga that defies easy categorisation by genre. Not coincidentally, it is some of the best manga out there, although not necessarily the most comercially sucesfull.

What is the meaning of life? Why is there so much suffering and cruelty in this world? The question of existence is explored in Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix saga, of which Phoenix: Dawn is the first volume. Jumping between the past and the future, the volumes of Phoenix see men and women build great empires only to see them collapse, struggle with genocide, deformity, death, even visits the end of the world. The late Tezuka is called the "god of manga" in Japan, and no person has been more influential in the creation and development of the artform.

Grim and nihilistic, Blue Spring follows poor high school boys, juvenile delinquents going nowhere, frustrated and bored with their aimless lives. Beautifull, poetic, and rings very true, doing nothing to glamorise the lives of its protagonists.
